1. 表示强调，注意以下3种用法：

(1) 用于陈述句中强调所陈述的内容，此时的indeed可置于句首、句中、句末等，其意为“的确”“确实”“真的”等。如：

①用于句首

Indeed, his caution is legendary. 确实，他的谨慎是尽人皆知的。

Indeed, it could be the worst environmental disaster that Western Europe has known this century. 这确实可能是本世纪西欧所经历的最严重的环境灾难。

②用于句中。尤其用于动词be和助动词之后。如：

That is indeed a remarkable thing! 那真是了不起的事情!

Let us assume for a moment that we could indeed fire her. Should we? 我们暂时假设我们真的能开除她，我们是不是该那样做呢?

③用于句末

This is bad news indeed. 这确实是坏消息。

We live in strange times indeed. 我们确实生活在奇怪的年代中。

④用于所强调的词语之后

A friend in need is a friend indeed. 患难见真情。

Of course, these occasions are rare indeed. 当然，这样的场合相当少见。

(2) 用于“very+形容词或副词”结构之后表示强调，该用法尤其见于英国英语中，其意为“真的”“的确”“实在是”。如：

That’s very good indeed. 这真是太好了。

I enjoyed it very much indeed. 我实在非常喜欢它。

He was driving very fast indeed. 他把车开得快极了。

(3) 用于肯定答复中以加强肯定答复的语气。如：

A：It’s cold. 天很冷。

B：It is indeed. 的确很冷。

A：Do you agree? 你同意了?

B：Yes indeed! 当然同意了!

2. 表示惊讶或生气，如表示感兴趣、惊讶、生气等，其意为“哦”“真的”。如：

That’s a fine excuse indeed. 那确实是个好借口。

A：I will earn a million dollars next year. 我明年要挣100万英镑。

B：Indeed? 真的吗?

A：He said he was too busy to see you. 他说他太忙，没时间见你。

B：Did he, indeed? 他这么说，真的吗?

3. 表示未知，通常与疑问词连用，用于重复前面提过的问题，表示不知道答案，并且认为不会有令人满意的答案。如：

A：Why did he do it? 你为什么那样做?

B：Why indeed? 是呀，为什么呢?

A：Now where are the real villains? 真的坏人在哪里呢?

B：Where indeed? 是呀，究竟在哪里呢?

A：And what do we do here? 我们在这儿干什么呢?

B：What, indeed? 是呀，究竟做什么呢?

A：When will we get a pay rise? 我们什么时候领工资?

B：When indeed? 是呀，什么时候呢?

4. 用于补充说明以进一步强调前面说过的内容，意为“甚至”“其实”“事实上”。如：

I didn’t mind at all. Indeed, I was pleased. 我一点也不介意，事实上我非常高兴。

The service will benefit students, and, indeed, all young people. 该项服务将给学生带来好处，甚至对所有年轻人都是如此。

5. 用于强调所述情况的真实性，意为“真的”“确实是”。如：

It was indeed the largest elephant in the world. 它确实是世界上最大的象。

The blood tests prove that Vince is indeed the father. 验血证明文斯的确是父亲。

Later, he admitted that the payments had indeed been made. 后来，他承认款确实已经付过了。

6. 一点说明：在英国英语中，用于“very+形容词或副词”之后加强语气时，其中修饰形容词或副词的very原则上不能没有。如：

误：Thank you indeed.（应在indeed前加上very much）

误：She spoke clearly indeed.（应在clearly前加上very）

误：I was pleased indeed to get your letter.（应在pleased前加上very）
